About TED

TED is devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people
from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, and Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader.
Along with two annual conferences -- the TED Conference on the West Coast each spring, and the TEDGlobal conference in Edinburgh UK each summer -- TED includes the award-winning TED Talks video site, the Open Translation Project and TED Conversations, the inspiring TED Fellows and TEDx programs (see About TEDx),
and the annual TED Prize.

The two annual TED conferences, on the North American West Coast and in Edinburgh, Scotland, bring together
the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes or less.

On TED.com, the best talks and performances from TED and partners are made available to the world, for free.
More than 1400 TED Talks are now available, with more added each week. All of the talks are subtitled in English,
and many are subtitled in various languages. These videos are released under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND license, so they can be freely shared and reposted.

TED’s mission: Spreading ideas. TED Talks began as a simple attempt to share what happens at TED with the world. Under the moniker "ideas worth spreading," talks were released online. They rapidly attracted a global audience
in the millions. Indeed, the reaction was so enthusiastic that the entire TED website has been reengineered around TED Talks, with the goal of giving everyone on-demand access to the world's most inspiring voices. As of November 2012, TED Talks have been viewed more than one billion times.

TED aims to provide a platform for the world's smartest thinkers, greatest visionaries and most-inspiring teachers, so that millions of people can gain a better understanding of the biggest issues faced by the world,
and a desire to help create a better future. Core to this goal is a belief that there is no greater force for changing
the world than a powerful idea.

TED is owned by The Sapling Foundation, a private nonprofit foundation, a 501(c)3 organization under US tax code.
It was established in 1996 by Chris Anderson, who was at that time a magazine publishing entrepreneur.
