Murphy Foundation Scientists are Working
at the Forefront of Cancer Prevention Research

In October 2014, Dr. Waters delivered a keynote talk at the opening session of the American Institute for Cancer Research Conference — one of the world's largest gathering of scientists and health professionals dedicated to the field of nutrition and cancer.  The thought-provoking scientific session was titled “Micronutrients in Cancer Prevention: Is Goldilocks Right After All?”  Murphy Foundation researchers have focused on defining the relationship between the essential trace mineral selenium and human prostate cancer risk and the challenge of optimizing health in a U-shaped world, where more of a “good thing” is not always better.  Dr. Waters told the audience: “Whether you are a disciple of Aristotle and his golden mean or Goldilocks and her affinity for baby bear’s porridge, the message is the same: Seek the optimal middle. The message was well received, earning Murphy foundation scientists an invitation to publish an authoritative perspective on what we are calling “U-shaped Thinking” in the peer-reviewed, scientific journal Advances in Nutrition. The target date for publication is summer 2015.  U-shaped Thinking ushers in a new way of thinking about how to improve the design and conduct of cancer prevention trials.  We will keep you updated so that you can download the paper from the Murphy Foundation website as soon as it becomes available.

Dr. Waters is a Guest Speaker at Upcoming
North American Veterinary Conference (NAVC)

Veterinarians in pursuit of cutting-edge continuing education will be gathering January 17-21, 2015 in Orlando, Florida at one of the largest veterinary medical meetings in the United States.  Dr. Waters will share with attendees his insights on successful aging that he has learned from leading the first-ever study of exceptionally long-lived pet dogs. This trailblazing work, initiated in 2005, hinges upon gathering clues to successful aging and cancer avoidance by studying the oldest-living, cancer-resistant Rottweilers.  Will your veterinarian be heading to NAVC?  Encourage your veterinarian to attend Dr. Waters’ talk titled: “Unlocking the Science Behind Exceptional Longevity in Dogs”.

Old Grey Muzzle Tour 2015

Now that Santa has made his rounds, it signals that Dr. Waters will soon be buckling up for another cross-country scientific expedition!  No doubt over the next weeks, Dr. Waters will be getting his sleigh tuned up so he can study exceptional Rottweilers that have reached the 13+ years mark … studying them in their homes.  During the 2015 Muzzle Tour, Dr. Waters will energetically combine this scientific achievement with educational stops across the U.S.  Ask anyone who has attended past Muzzle Tour Celebration Stops and they will tell you that these evenings are an unforgettable experience.  This year’s mantra is “Aging Exceptionally, Cancering Successfully”.   If you or your organization is interested in hosting one of these fun, educational Celebration Stops along the 2015 Muzzle Tour, contact us at murphyfoundation@gpmcf.org.
